Matthew 9:28 “Do you believe I am able to do this?”
Firstly let me go into how major this question is to any believer who has chosen to follow Christ..
The context of this passage is that Jesus is leaving the house where He just raised the little girl from the dead. Now, of course there is a multitude of people following Him, but these 2 blind men are heard crying out.. Son Of David, Have mercy on us!
Two things are done here.. #1. These men are crying out for help, but #2, They are addressing Him by His messianic name..
This means one thing they understand His authority and identity, but this is a clear example that just because we understand something doesn’t mean we believe it.
This is a teachable moment for me.. Because they follow Jesus, only having heard about a miracle He had done in raising a little girl from the dead and I perceive that they ponder within themselves, “If He raised that little girl, surely He could restore my eyesight” How many of us have issues and we see Jesus do wondrous things in the lives of others but we think to ourselves…”Not me!” Noooo! He couldn’t do something like that for me although I know who He is and His power in that He did it for someone else..
This is challenging to perceive because Jesus waits until He is in the house before the men come to Him.. what faith it takes to keep on following Christ even when it seems like He is ignoring us completely and the answer has not come in the time we wanted.. This text says something strange however… when they came to Him, He asked them a question.. “Do you believe I am able?”
There is a song I love which says “Exceedingly, abundantly above all we could ask or think according to the power that works in you! God is able to do just what HE said He will do, He’s gonna fulfill every promise to you.. Don’t give up on God, cause He won’t give up on you.. He’s able! Then there is a part that says.. He’s able.. He’s able!”
Do you believe that I am able to do this? that’s the question?? the thing that you have come to Him about while you were outside but He’s waited until He was in the house.. Do you have enough courage and faith to still go in faith believing with full confidence that not only is He able, but He is willing and will do it for You, according to your faith!
